It aims to integrate the lessons learned from the design, construction and commissioning of the EPR reactors at ĿĴŀĴŁʼnļĿĿĸ ӆё ĿľļĿňłŇł ӆё ĴļņĻĴŁ ӄׇĴŁķ ӅׇĴŁķ ļŁľĿĸŌі łļŁŇ ё along with operating experience feedback from existing reactors. In addition, the design of this reactor will be incorporating all the ĿĸņņłŁņ ĿĸĴŅŁĸķ ĹŅłŀ ŇĻĸ ňľňņĻļŀĴ ĴļļĶĻļ ĴĶĶļķĸŁŇє Ļļņ more specifically entails reinforcing the design against natural ĻĴōĴŅķņ ĴŁķ ĶłŁņłĿļķĴŇļŁĺ ŇĻĸ ļŁķĸŃĸŁķĸŁĶĸ łĹ ŇĻĸ ļŁņŇĴĿĿĴŇļłŁ and the site in an accident situation (with or without core melt) until such time as the off-site resources can intervene. ASN examined the Safety Options Dossier (DOS) for the EPR NM with the support of IRSN, taking account of the recommendations łĹ ňļķĸ łє ӅӅׇłŁ ķĸņļĺŁє Ň ŇĻĸ ŅĸńňĸņŇ łĹ ё ŇĻĸ ŀĸŇ ļŁ ĴŁňĴŅŌ ӅӃӄӋׇŇł ĸŋĴŀļŁĸ ŇĻļņ ķłņņļĸŅє Ł ӅӃӄӋё ņĸŁŇ ļŇņ ķĸĶļņļłŁ Ňł ňŃĺŅĴķĸ ŇĻĸ ŇĸĶĻŁļĶĴĿ configuration of the EPR NM to a new version, called EPR 2. Ł ӄӉׇ ňĿŌ ӅӃӄӌё ŇĻňņ ŃňĵĿļņĻĸķ ļŇņ łŃļŁļłŁ łŁ ŇĻĸ ņĴĹĸŇŌ łŃŇļłŁņ ŃŅłŃłņĸķ ĹłŅ ŇĻĸ ŅĸĴĶŇłŅ ĴŁķ ļŇņ ׇӅ configuration upgrade. ASN considers that the general safety objectives, the safety baseline requirements and the main design options are on the whole satisfactory. ASN’s opinion identifies the subjects to be considered in greater depth prior to submitting a reactor creation authorisation application. Additional justifications are in particular needed on the break preclusion approach for the main primary and secondary piping, the approach for dealing with ĻĴōĴŅķņё ĹļŅĸ ĴŁķ ĸŋŃĿłņļłŁ ļŁ ŃĴŅŇļĶňĿĴŅё ĴŁķ ŇĻĸ ķĸņļĺŁ ĶĻłļĶĸņ ĹłŅ certain safety systems. In any creation authorisation application ĹłŅ Ĵ ŅĸĴĶŇłŅё ŊļĿĿ ĻĴʼnĸ Ňł ņŃĸĶļĹŌ ŇĻĸ ĴķķļŇļłŁĴĿ ņŇňķļĸņ ĴŁķ justifications provided in response to this opinion, as well as the resulting modifications to the safety options. • ³ȅƏǼǼ xȒƳɖǼƏȸ «ƺƏƬɎȒȸɀ Several Small Modular Reactor (SMR) projects are currently being developed around the world. These are reactors with a ŃłŊĸŅ łĹ Ŀĸņņ ŇĻĴŁ ӆӃӃׇ ĸё ĵňļĿŇ ļŁ Ĵ ĹĴĶŇłŅŌ ĴŁķ ķĸĿļʼnĸŅĸķ Ňł ŇĻĸļŅ ļŁņŇĴĿĿĴŇļłŁ ņļŇĸє ŅĸŁĶĻ ŃŅłĽĸĶŇ ļŁʼnłĿʼnļŁĺ ё ĸĶĻŁļĶĴŇłŀĸё ŅĸŁĶĻ ĿŇĸŅŁĴŇļʼnĸ ŁĸŅĺļĸņ ĴŁķ ŇłŀļĶ Energy Commission (CEA) and Naval Group is currently at the preliminary design stage.
