Les cahiers de l'ASN #06

conditioning* storage* and disposal* Conditioning is all the operations consisting in introducing waste into a container, possibly by incorporating it into an encapsulating or blocking matrix, to form a waste package. The protection of human health and the environment (article L. 593-1 of the Environment Code) is monitored by ASN at each step in the management process. There are significant safety issues in the transport operations involved in waste management (in particular for spent fuel* shipments). The packages must be approved by ASN, after a technical examination by IRSN. This handbook does not aim to cover all the issues and regulations in force in the transport of radioactive waste.
