Medical response in a nuclear or radiological emergency

1. Place a vinyl sheet measuring 1 metre by 1 metre on the ground, and then place an open 350-litre bin bag on it, rolled down inside out. This operation is to be carried out by two operators called “undressers”, kitted out with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 2. Stand the victim in the centre of the sheet and open their clothes: • at the sleeves: start from the collar (neck)working towards the hands; • at the front closure of the jacket or coverall. As opening proceeds, roll the clothes over themselves, turning them inside out. The contamination deposited on the surface of the clothes is thus confined. 3. Slit the bottom of trouser legs so that the trousers can be removed without taking the shoes off, and open the trousers at the waist and roll them fully down over themselves. UNDRESSING DIAGRAM FOR STANDING VICTIMS Provide a kit containing: two bin bags (30-litre and 350-litre), one non-woven garment type 3-4, slippers, an explanatory sheet The personnel stays at a distance from the victim whenever the situation so permits (able-bodied victim) Place personal effects (keys, etc.) in the small bin bag Put on an FFP3 mask or, failing this, an FFP2 mask, and a surgical cap Undressing starts with the upper part of the body Undressing is done with the person standing in the 350- bin bag which is rolled down around their feet The open clothes are rolled over themselves inside out 1 m² protective vinyl sheet on ground 100 MEDICAL RESPONSE IN NUCLEAR OR RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY SHEET 33 AACTION TO TAKE IN A 1ST LINE HEALTHCARE FACILITY Undressing the victims
