Small Modular Reactors (SMR)

ASN ensures the oversight of all French nuclear facilities. Several small modular reactor (SMR) projects are currently being developed around the world. Faced with the challenges of developing these nuclear reactors, ASN has set up an organisation to examine projects in France.

Several small modular reactor projects are being developed around the world. They use a variety of reactors technologies: light water reactors (LWR) but also advanced technologies such as high-temperature gas cooled reactors (HTGR) , molten salt reactors (MSR) and lead/sodium cooled fast neutrons reactors (LFR/SFR).

ASN adapts to innovative SMRs

The SMR projects led by new players not only involve a wide variety of reactor technologies, but also introduce new uses for nuclear energy, such as industrial heat production.
