Pierre-Marie Abadie appointed ASN Chairman

By decree of the President of the Republic of 4 November 2024, Pierre-Marie Abadie is appointed Chairman of ASN, with effect from 13 November 2024. He will then become the first Chairman of the ASNR in accordance with the provisions of article 9 of the Act of 21 May 2024 establishing the ASNR.
He succeeds Bernard Doroszczuk, who was appointed Chairman of ASN in 2018 and whose mandate ends on 12 November 2024.
An engineer from the Paris Ecole des Mines (1994), Pierre-Marie Abadie is also a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique (1988).
He has extensive knowledge and experience of the energy and nuclear sectors, enhanced by a varied interministerial career (Ecology, Finance, Defence) and knowledge of several public policy sectors.
In 1994, he was appointed deputy director of the Lorraine Regional Directorate for Research and Industry (DRIRE) and head of the regional industrial environment department (SREI), in charge of Installation Classified for Protection of the Environment (ICPE).
Between 1998 and 2002, he held a number of positions in the Treasury Department of the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry.
From 2002 to 2007, he was advisor on industrial affairs to the Ministry of Defence, where he supervised numerous industrial restructuring projects and the armaments programmes of the Directorate-General of Armaments and its reform.
From 2007 to 2014, he was Director of Energy at the Directorate-General for Energy and Climate (DGEC) of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy. In this capacity, he was government commissioner on the boards of Andra and EDF, and vice-chairman of the board of governors of the International Energy Agency.
Since 2014, Pierre-Marie Abadie has been Director General of the French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (ANDRA).
Pierre-Marie Abadie is a Knight of the Legion of Honour and of the National Order of Merit.

With this appointment, the college of ASN and the future ASNR is complete.
It is made up of five Commissioners, including the ASN Chairman. They are appointed for a period of six years, with the President of the Republic appointing three of them. The other two are appointed by the President of each Parliamentary assembly respectively.
By law, the members of the Commission perform their duties with total impartiality and receive no instructions from either the Government or any other person or institution. They exercise their functions on a full-time basis and their mandate is neither renewable nor revocable.
The Commission defines the ASN strategy and doctrine for the regulation of nuclear safety and radiation protection. It takes the most important decisions. It issues public opinions on the major issues that lie within the competence of ASN. It reports to the French Parliament.
