Protection of nuclear installations against the risk of fire: France presents its national report as part of the ENSREG peer review seminars
Information notice
In accordance with Council Directive 2014/87/EURATOM, the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) periodically organises peer reviews on a specific topic for all the Member States (Topical Peer Review - TPR). The topic of fire protection for nuclear installations was chosen for the second peer review.
The 2024 Peer Review (38 experts from the national safety authorities of the 22 participating countries) was led by Sylvie Cadet-Mercier, who chaired the committee responsible for overseeing the process.
Following the national evaluation reports in 2023 and their peer review, two seminars were organised to share and discuss practices on both generic themes and specific aspects (country by country):
- Thematic seminar from 9 to 12 September 2024 in Luxembourg
- Country seminar from 30 September to 3 October 2024 in Luxembourg.
More than 130 participants attended the thematic seminar. A wide range of subjects were covered, including the organisation in place for the management of combustible materials, the organisation of fire-fighting, fire detection and the methods used in fire risk analyses. ASN, IRSN and the French operators represented (EDF, CEA and Orano) were able to explain the fire risk management measures in place at the various nuclear facilities in France
During the "countries" seminar, Christophe Quintin, ASN Chief Inspector, presented France's national report on 1 October 2024. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session and a discussion between the experts and the French representatives (ASN, IRSN, EDF, CEA and Orano), which highlighted the improvements made to the facilities, particularly as part of the safety review. The experts noted the quality of the French presentation, as well as certain practices (seven "areas of good performance") that deserve to be particularly highlighted and known internationally.
