Following publication of EDF internal documents concerning maintenance of the emergency electricity generators for its nuclear reactors, ASN makes the following clarifications.

Incident of 9 April 2014 on reactor 1 of the Fessenheim NPP

On 9th April 2014, ASN was informed by EDF that internal flooding in the non-nuclear part of reactor 1 in the Fessenheim nuclear power plant had damaged the safety electrical systems, leading to shutdown of reactor 1.

Corrosion of fission products concentrating evaporators at La Hague

On Thursday 11 February 2016, the ASN Commission called Philippe Knoche, Managing Director, to a hearing concerning the corrosion of the evaporators used to concentrate fission products on the La Hague site in presence of Philippe Varin, Chairman of the Areva group. This equipment, which was designed for an operational life of thirty years, entered into service between 1989 and 1994.

The “safety analysis report” is the document that the licensee is required to send to ASN to support an application for authorisation to create, commission or decommission a basic nuclear installation (BNI)

The nuclear safety and radiation protection situation is of major concern

On 20 January, through its Chairman, Mr Pierre-Franck Chevet, ASN presented its New Year’s wishes to the press, in its Montrouge headquarters. Mr Pierre-Franck Chevet reviewed the current challenges faced by ASN and the strategic priorities for nuclear safety and radiation protection in 2016.

Cost of the Cigéo project: ASN publishes its opinion on the evaluation proposed by Andra

In accordance with the procedure stipulated in the Environment Code, the Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy is required to determine the reference cost of the Cigéo disposal facility project.

Nuclear power plant at Le Blayais: Irradiation of a worker during the scheduled outage of reactor 4

On 21st August 2015, ASN was informed by EDF of the accidental exposure of a worker from an EDF contractor to a dose of ionising radiation exceeding the regulation limit.

Flamanville reactor 2 incident: EDF decided to lift its emergency plan with ASN’s approval

EDFs’ workers inspected the involved smoke emission room of the reactor n° 2 of the Flamanville NPP. The results of the inspection put forward that the emergency situation shall not be maintained, EDF decided to lift its emergency plan with ASN’s approval.

Flamanville reactor 2 incident: the ASN has activated its national emergency center

On 26 August 2015 at 2:15 am, EDF activated its emergency plan at the Flamanville nuclear power plant as consequence of smoke emission from the nuclear auxiliary building of the reactor n° 2 which has been shut down for maintenance. The involved installation is used for the treatment of radioactive waste.

Over-exposure of a female operator of an industrial radiography contractor

On 31st July 2015, a female operator of the Colomiers agency of the company Apave Sudeurope was accidentally exposed in the agency's bunker to radiation emitted by an X-ray generator used for industrial radiography.

Background to the discovery of the anomaly affecting the Flamanville EPR reactor vessel

On 7th April 2015, ASN made public the discovery of an anomaly in the composition of the steel in certain zones of the vessel closure head and the vessel bottom head of the Flamanville EPR reactor.

HERCA Workshop Implementation of RRPE & RPO

The Heads of the European Radiation protection Competent Authorities (HERCA) have organised on 6-8 July 2015, a workshop kindly hosted by the French nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) in its premises in Montrouge (France) on the implementation of Radiation Protection Expert (RPE) and Radiation Protection Officer (RPO).
