ASN participes to the 40th INRA meeting and holds its steering committee meeting with the US NRC
Information notice
On May 17 and 18, the 40th meeting of the International Nuclear Regulators’ Association (INRA1) allowed the participating heads of nuclear safety authorities to discuss their practices, the current state and challenges of nuclear safety as well as the regulations implemented in each country regarding the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. Pierre-Franck Chevet, ASN Chairman, took part in the meeting and visited along with his counterparts the Zion NPP, located north of Chicago, currently under decommissioning.
After this meeting, ASN held its annual steering committee meeting with the USNuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC), its American counterpart. Among the issues discussed was the problem of carbon segregation, which affects a number of pressurized equipment in French facilities. In a more general way, the NRC explained the manner in which it oversees the operating reactors as well as the reactors in construction in the United States with the respective Reactor Oversight Process (ROP2) and Construction Reactor Oversight Process (cROP3). Both authorities discussed several cooperation topics such as the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and the oversight of nuclear installations’ environmental impact. They also confirmed their determination to carry on with their foreign assignees’ program, which helps reinforcing mutual understanding and sharing respective knowledge and preoccupations.
The next bilateral meeting between ASN and the NRC is scheduled for June 2018 in Paris.
1. Created in 1997, the INRA is composed of the heads of the nuclear safety authorities of nine countries (Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States). Its members meet twice a year. It is chaired by the United States in 2017 and will be chaired by the UK in 2018.
