ASN makes public the National Report of France established for the sixth Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety

In order to comply with the obligations of the Convention on Nuclear Safety¹ (CNS), the sixth National Report of France, for which the drafting is coordinated by ASN, has been submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and uploaded on ASN website on 14^th August 2013.

This Convention applies to all civil nuclear-power generating reactors operated worldwide and new builds; it sets a number of nuclear safety objectives for them. Therefore, most of this report is dedicated to the measures taken in order to ensure their safety. However, France has taken the initiative to extend the scope of its National Report by including safety of research reactors.

Prepared with contributions from the licensees of the nuclear installations concerned (EDF, CEA, ILL), IRSN, the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Mission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this report is being analysed by the 75 other Contracting Parties to the CNS. The report will be presented at the next Review Meeting, chaired by André-Claude Lacoste (chairman of ASN from 2006 to 2012), scheduled in Vienna from March 24 to April 4, 2014.

Three years after the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi NPP, this Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety will be the opportunity to sum up the actions undertaken by the Contracting Parties and in particular to continue sharing the lessons learned from this accident. Therefore, the National Report of France takes into consideration issues identified during the second Extraordinary Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, which has been held in August 2012.

Moreover, national level actions to support IAEA’s nuclear safety action plan² has been included in an appendix of the report.
