ASN defines the rules applicable to the conditioning of radioactive waste and the acceptance of radioactive waste packages in disposal BNIs
Information notice
ASN resolution 2017-DC-0587 of 23 March 2017 defines the rules applicable to the conditioning of radioactive waste and the conditions for acceptance of radioactive waste packages in disposal BNIs. It more particularly specifies the obligations of the radioactive waste holder, those of the licensee conditioning the waste and those of the licensee of the disposal facility for which it is intended.
This resolution also makes a distinction between the case of disposal facilities under study and the case of disposal BNIs in operation.
The main provisions of the resolution of 23 March 2017 concern:
- the general requirements concerning the conditioning of radioactive waste;
- the conditioning baseline requirements defined by the licensee of a conditioning BNI;
- the radioactive waste package acceptance criteria defined by the licensee of a disposal BNI;
- the requirements set for the packages intended for a disposal BNI under study.
This resolution notably clarifies the provisions of the order of 7 February 2012 setting the general rules applicable to BNIs and transposes reference levels defined by the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association (WENRA). This ASN resolution was the subject of a public consultation from 17 August to 18 October 2015.
