Bilateral meeting between ASN and its South African counterpart and observation of an emergency exercise

As part of the bilateral relations between ASN and its counterparts abroad, an ASN delegation met a delegation from NNR, South Africa's nuclear safety authority, in Cape Town from 18 to 20 November 2024.
The meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm the close links that have existed between the two authorities for many years. The mission involved observing an emergency exercise at the Koeberg nuclear power plant and preparing for the implementation of a European project (ICSN) to support African nuclear safety authorities, including NNR, coordinated by ASN.
The aim of this exercise was to observe the emergency management arrangements implemented by the operator and the public authorities to respond effectively to nuclear accidents and radiological emergencies.
In addition to ASN, the IAEA and the Department of Nuclear Applications of the Ministry of Health and Social Services of Namibia, a country bordering South Africa, also attended the stakeholder observer programme of the exercise.
