Radiation protection recommendations for the transport of radioactive substances

The inspections carried out by ASN, the French nuclear safety authority, reveal that the risk of exposure to ionisation radiation is not sufficiently integrated in the preventive measures relating to the transport of radioactive substances. Yet some transport activities have significant radiation protection implications, particularly for the workers due to their close proximity to the packages. The annual dose for a driver transporting radiopharmaceuticals can thus reach 14 millisieverts per year (mSv/year)1, the maximum regulatory value being 20 mSv/year.

EPR Reactor: Information Letter n°20

ASN continued its monitoring of the Flamanville 3 EPR reactor construction site and the various manufactured items intended for it. The significant points for 2017 and early 2018 are detailed below; ASN was particularly vigilant with regard to start-up testing activities, which were ramped up during the course of the past year.

Overexposure of two practitioners at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital (Paris)

On 14 November 2017 the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital Group (Paris) notified ASN of two significant radiation protection events affecting a resident physician and a head of clinic respectively while performing interventional procedures in neuroradiology.

ASN Report on the State of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection in France in 2017

On 12th April, ASN presented its report on the state of nuclear safety and radiation protection in France in 2017 to the National Assembly’s Parliamentary Office for the Evaluation of Scientific and Technological Choices (OPECST). This report was handed over to the Presidents of the Senate and the National Assembly, and to the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. It is published today on www.asn.fr.

Significant radiation protection event at the Le Mans Hospital: ASN conducted an inspection

On 8th March 2018, the Le Mans Hospital notified ASN of a significant radiation protection event concerning a pregnant woman who underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan during the night of 6th March 2018.

Flamanville EPR reactor: ASN inspection on 10th April 2018

On 10th April 2018, ASN carried out an inspection on the Flamanville EPR reactor construction site to examine how the welds on the main secondary systems were checked following EDF’s discovery of welding flaws, which had not been detected during the manufacturing checks.

On 20 October 2017, the Delafontaine Hospital Centre (Saint-Denis, France - 93 200) notified ASN of a significant radiation protection event affecting a radiologist performing fluoroscopy-guided interventional practices using a scanner.

Management of radioactive waste in France - examined in depth under the auspices of the IAEA

From 15 to 24 January 2018, a delegation of 10 international experts working under the auspices of the IAEA examined the organisation of radioactive waste management in France. The experts met teams from the DGEC1, ASN, the DGPR2, IRSN, Andra, and the radioactive waste producers.

Creusot Forge plant: production to resume

ASN informed Framatome and EDF that it considers that the steps taken at the Creusot Forge plant allow the production of components intended for French nuclear facilities to resume under certain conditions, more particularly, the surveillance of the activities.

Earthquake resistance of the EDF reactor emergency diesel generator sets

In 2017, EDF notified two events significant for safety which occurred on the emergency diesel generator sets of its nuclear power reactors. ASN rated these two events level 2 on the INES scale.
